Guitar Scales! I know I've harped about how important modes are to being able to expand your musical horizons. It's time to focus on the more basic principle: if you learn how to play guitar scales well, playing melodies will follow nicely, allowing you to play that kick-ass guitar solo you've been hearing in your head but can't bring out of your axe yet. If you know chords, you'll be able to add an appropriate chord progression to your melody as well. If you don't know chords, learn them! Even if you only learn a couple of power chords, you'll be able to add a progression to your tune.

My point is that you need to practice guitar scales, even when you're good at your instrument. The best musicians do this regularly, on any instrument. They all play some incarnation of scalar exercises. In piano, they're usually called etudes. Playing etudes and scales will help build the muscle memory in your fingers, and also strengthen them so that the more you play scales, the more natural it feels.

I've included the A Aeolian (minor) guitar scale here, which is is fairly popular since you can play an A chord with an open string. Plus, it goes along well with a piano player who isn't too well-versed with the black keys. I'm only including it as a reference, not as a teaching guide. When playing both octaves, remember to adjust your finger position from fret 5 to fret 7 for the second octave.

Find some rhythmic patterns to play the scale to, and you'll find that it's not that hard to find a unique melodic groove.

I like playing a full scale in 5/4 time, which is an odd time signature, but it's fun. I play the first note of each octave on the previous half-beat. Let me show you what I mean...

I need to learn how to format spaces on EzineArticles.com. Anyway, this is good practice for finding your finger positions to repeat that over and over as an exercise. I've put finger positions that should be used up on top of this tab to help out. Remember to adjust your 1st finger from 5th fret to 7th fret on the second octave! Life will be easier.

It would be good practice to learn legato technique here so that you don't have to pick every string. It sounds much smoother to hammer on (press your finger quickly and firmly without picking the string) when going up the guitar scale and pull off (pluck the string with your finger as you release it) when going back down the guitar scale. It works better when your pickups are sensitive and your amp has a good level of distortion. If you have an acoustic guitar, you can still practice these techniques, but the sound won't be as noticeable to you. Legato just means that the notes are connected--there is no break between one to the next. Pluck the first note on a string, then hammer the rest. Pluck the first note of the next string, hammer the rest, etc. Try to make sure your plucking is no more harsh than your hammers or pulls. It is a technique that takes time and practice, but it sounds good when done right.

Perhaps you just purchased a new guitar or have received one as a gift and are determined to learn to play the guitar tabs. Many times learning to play is not as difficult as one might make it out to be, but having the proper courses is key to learning everything about the guitar. When you look at the guitar and hold it, you probably cannot believe that it is really yours and you just want to begin playing, but of course, you need to learn some of the basics.

First, when you look at a sheet of music that is written in tabs, it looks like a foreign language to you because it is. Learning to read music is no different than learning a language you are not familiar with because music has its own set of rules and when you understand the rules, you can then apply them to your guitar playing. Perhaps you have seen your favorite guitarist and assumed that you could just pick it up with no training, but the when you try, you soon find out that playing the guitar is something that not only has to be learned, but practiced if you want to get better.

When you look at a piece of music written for a guitar, you will notice that the six bars or horizontal lines are what represent the six strings on your guitar. Always keep this in mind because this is the key to beginning to play and understand the tabs. The six strings on your guitar are E, B, G, D, A, and E - notice there are two "E's" this is because the top or first E is the higher pitched, the bottom E is the low E. Therefore, keep in mind when learning the tabs that the higher strings correspond to a higher pitch, the lower strings are lower-pitched.

One of the things that many new guitar players have a problem with when learning the tabs, is that the tablature does not tell you exactly how long you should hold a note, or how fast you are supposed to play the piece because the tabs are different than traditional music pieces that tell you how long to hold the note or how quickly to play. This is why it is vital to listen to how the song is played because this can help you to know how long or how fast the tabs are played.

Finally, when you want to learn the guitar tabs the right way, nothing is better than an online guitar course because it can give you the skills you need to study anytime you want. The tabs are something that you learn via an online course and therefore, having a systematic and structured way of learning to play the guitar tabs via Internet lessons is one of the best ways to gain the needed knowledge. You will soon find that you are not only playing guitar but reading and understanding the tabs.

The fastest way to learn to play piano and make music, is to count out loud.

If you choose not to, then you must use a Metronome...

Every student, regardless of age, thinks that he or she can count in their heads and negotiate even the simplest rhythm pattern. It is impossible for the beginner student!

Let me tell you a story... I was reviewing the progress of a 9 year old student private student. This was her 3rd lesson. She'd never played before, but possessed the arithmetic aptitude to understand the division of notes.

Her first initial lessons were written in either 2 and 4 beat rhythmic patters. The song she was attempting to play was a 3-beat pattern (3/4 meter). The count is: 1 2 3, 1 2 3...etc. This rhythm pattern is associated with a waltz tempo. But she was playing in the following manner: 1 2 3 (rest), 1 2 3 (rest)...

When she was resting, she was attempting to find the finger position on the keyboard. Until I told her to "slow it down..." and count out loud with the emphasis on the first beat, did she play it correctly. I made her count out loud, and when she did, she understood the pulse!

You see... if you deliberately and consistently count out loud when you practice, I guarantee that you will see progress.

Sometimes, when you're listening to music, practice counting out loud. And remember to always slow it down when you are learning new material.

I want you to make sure that you enjoy your time spent at the piano creating music.

Just think about this...

Why is it that when we were children growing up, and when we informed our parents that we were going outside to play basketball, soccer or baseball... we didn't say: "practice baseball, soccer or baseball..? But in reality, we were practicing the sport of our choice.

Always remember to take the same attitude with your piano studies and when you play piano for your personal pleasure... have FUN and ENJOY it.

The easiest way to attain this level of consciousness is to count out loud at first, and then when you are able to play with a "real feel" your body will do the counting for you!

Playing the keyboard is an excellent skill for anyone who wants to wants to be involved in any field of music. The layout of the keys makes it reasonably easy to pick up the basic elements and the training helps you acquire musical knowledge and understand the principles of music theory. Learn to play keyboard with a teacher or on your own with help of an instruction manual or online program.

A keyboard is part of a musical instrument on which notes are played by striking keys. There are usually 88 of these, 52 white and 36 black. The player is generally seated, and uses both hands. The central key is the note middle C. The keys to the right are those of the treble clef and to the left are those of the base clef.

Instruments such as the piano and organ can be played on their own, as part of an orchestra or to accompany a vocalist. Modern electric keyboards which are smaller and much more portable than their larger counterparts are widely used in modern music.

Keyboards can be easier to learn than stringed, woodwind or brass instruments as the layout of the keys relate to the notes on a musical score. An E, for example, is next to the F on the board and beneath it on the stave. The notes in both the treble and bass cleff are clustered together and all sharps and flats are played by striking the black notes.

It is best to start learning young, preferably between 5 and 10 years of age. Adult learners, however, can also become proficient players with the right tuition.

There are various methods of teaching and different schools of thought as to which is the most successful approach. Individual lessons with a qualified teacher is probably the best way although it is also the most expensive. Some music schools also hold group lessons and this is particularly popular for younger children.

To find a teacher, search online or in your local telephone directory. Ask around for recommendations also. Take into account the teacher's qualifications, experience and reputation and make sure he or she is friendly and encouraging.

If you prefer to learn yourself, look in your local library or bookshop or music store for a manual or DVD. These should give you the basic skills and are ideal for anyone who likes independent learning. To find lessons online, conduct an internet search and look through the different sites. Many of these are free and offer comprehensive instruction.
